What is Coaching?

If you're reading this, you've maybe heard of Coaching or would like a better explaination of how it works. So, what is Coaching? In the Coaching/Client relationship, the Client is the expert in their life, their problems and what needs to be done to overcome the Client's barriers to success. The Coach works with the Clients a safe, non-judgmental environment and through a series of conversations, helps the Client identify what their goals are, how their barriers to success developed, and form action plans to those goals. Then the Coach acts as a point of accountability for the client on thier action plans. Research has shown that people are much more inclined to follow through on plans for self care and personal growth if they are self directed with external accountability.
So, while Coaching is a lot of things, let's start also talk about what it isn't. Coaching isn't Therapy. Whew!! Glad that's out of the way. Licensed Therapists are an invaluable resource when we have major emotional barriers and diagnoses to over come. Let's say from Drowning to Struggling to Thriving with overall functioning. If you're drowning; on the verge of a complete crisis. It is critical, and a Coach's professional obligation, you receive the professional help of a good therapist or psychiatrist, and not a Coach AT THIS TIME. This doesn't mean that a Coach can't work with a client with diagnosis like Depression, Anxiety, Autism, etc. On the contrary! It just means, once the state of crisis is resolved, then the Coach/Client relationship has a better chance of successful with your Coach. (If you have any questions what that means, always consult your providers/Coach)
Now, let's say you're Struggling and need some help getting organized, have some anxiety in social situations, or need help setting personal boundries. Then a Coach would most likely be a good fit. The goal of a Coach is help you worh through the Struggle, and able to see barriers coming and develop workable action plans. And hopefully able to sustaine a Thriving state after Coaching. Emotionally sound, problem solving, able balance responsibilities with self-care and rest.
